Homecoming is an ESPN program hosted by award-winning sportswriter Rick Reilly. On Wednesday, December 9th Reilly will take his unique style of storytelling to Michigan State University for a one-on-one interview with NBA legend Magic Johnson.
"Magic" is one of the most colorful and recognizable nicknames in the history of sports. But long before we all knew his as "Magic", on of the greatest and most entertaining basketball players of all time, Earvin Johnson, Jr. was a household name in his hometown of Lansing, Michigan. As a senior at Everett High School, he won a state championship in basketball. Just two years later , in what would become the most watched college basketball game ever, Johnson led the Michigan State Spartans to an NCAA Championship against Larry Birds Indiana State.
Incredibly, his legend continued to grow with an even better professional career in Los Angeles. With the Lakers, he captured five NBA Championships, was named an All- Star 12 times, was MVP three times, won an Olympic Gold Medal with the USA Dream Team and was inducted twice into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. After being diagnosed with the HIV virus, Earvin's sudden retirement from basketball shocked the world but he trasformed that shock into inspiration with a courageous and successful fight against the disease.
Earvin "Magic" Johnson returns to Jenison Fieldhouse at Michigan State University to tell his amazing story in front of former teammates, coaches, family friends and fans. It will be a truly memorable HOMECOMING.
